Every machine has one. The grease fitting you skip because it never takes grease anyway. Maybe it's tucked behind a loader arm, maybe it's on a kingpin you can barely reach, or maybe you've pumped it until the gun locked up and nothing came out but a little grease squeezing around the coupler.
So you move on, and tell yourself you'll deal with it later.
Here's the problem with later. A fitting that won't take grease means the joint behind it is running dry. Metal is grinding on metal every time that pin turns. The wear is silent and slow, until the day the bushing is egg-shaped, the pin is scored, and a job that could have been prevented with a few minutes of grease becomes a repair bill with parts, downtime and a lost week in the middle of your busiest season.
Most seized fittings aren't broken. They're blocked with grease that has hardened over months or years, packed with dirt, or plugged by a stuck check ball. The usual fixes, like heating the joint, pulling the fitting, or hauling the machine to a shop, cost time you don't have.
This manual exists to change that. In the pages ahead you'll learn:
why fittings seize in the first place, and how to spot a dry joint before it fails
how to clear a blocked fitting on the spot with mechanical pressure, without heat or teardown
when a fitting can be saved and when it needs to be replaced
a simple greasing routine to keep it from happening again
a printable grease log to track every point on your machine
One promise up front: this isn't theory. Everything here is written for people who keep their own equipment running in the yard, the field or the shop, with the tools they already have.
A word on safety. Grease under pressure is dangerous. Always wear eye protection, and never cover a fitting or a leak with your hand or fingers while pressure is applied. Grease injected under the skin is a medical emergency, even if it looks like a small cut. If that ever happens, go to a hospital immediately.
Now let's get that fitting flowing.
